Psychology Society
The Psychology Society (PsS) is an organization that fosters students’ interest in expanding their knowledge of psychological science and associated fields. We collaborate closely with the Department of Psychological and Social Sciences (DPSS) to promote our field of study and improve the experience of all JCU students. We explore how psychology and social sciences can help create a better society, where we can fight against injustices and prejudice, by raising awareness about current-day issues.
Aim
The Psychology Society aims to create a stable network between psychology students and between psychology students and their professors, contributing to strengthening connections within the department. Through a series of activities, including lectures and discussion panels, the Psychology Society aims to create a space for students and professors to examine recent scientific research, share research ideas, discuss current psychological matters, and collaborate in an open learning environment, furthering classroom knowledge. However, to join, you do not need previous knowledge of psychology or social sciences!
Activities
Guest lectures: The Society’s lecture series hosts JCU professors or experts from other international institutions who engage in conversation with students and answer questions about their research and field of study. These events, organized in collaboration with the DPSS, allow students to learn about different psychological issues and topics, and also provide excellent networking opportunities.
Awareness events: These events are aimed at fostering conversation and raising awareness about topics
not often openly discussed because of stigma. Some examples include neurodiversity,
gender identity, limitations of diagnostic categories for mental disorders, and many
more. By giving space to these conversations, we hope to promote a more inclusive
environment at JCU, where students feel comfortable asking uncomfortable questions.
Career opportunities events: This series of events is aimed at helping students find their own career path. Professors,
alumni, and professionals are invited to discuss the different paths one can take
after graduating with a BA in Psychological Science. Through these events, we hope
to provide additional guidance to the students and show them the possibilities that
the future holds for them.
